Dear Marketing (as we know you),
You’ve had a good run. Truly. Mass Marketing, Digital Marketing, Watered-Down-SEO-Friendly Marketing, Social Media Marketing, and, my favourite, Write-Like-Your-My-Friend Marketing.
I’d like to explain why I feel the need to say my final goodbyes to you, old-clingy-friend.
I Am Not Listening
I know the difference between NEED & WANT. I know the difference between genuine care and superficial copywriting. I know when you want to take my money (way before you even ask). I know that your influencer is making money by promoting your product.
Some things we look for in companies now:
1. You Actually Care
These are the TOMS Shoes, Thankyou & What The Crap, company’s of the world. They take products (and commodities) add life changing value to them. I want to save the world. If you can give me a way to do that, I will be willing to pay more for your product instead of your cheaper competitor.
2. You Have an Incredible Product
No, not incredible to YOU. Incredible to me. Does it save me time or money? Does it support who I am or who I want to be?
To sum it up, the only way to live and survive now as a business is to stop being selfish. Stop trying to bleed us dry. Stop being greedy. We see you. If you provide an incredible product, we will pay lots of money for it. There are still profitable ideas. However, we will not continue to pay for average. We will not continue to “listen” to how amazing your less-than-amazing product it. You have to show us. Prove it. Earn it.
Stop with the gimmics. Stop with the tricks, dear marketer. It’s time to evolve.
